People continue to fall for a scam regarding electric bills in the Florida Keys.
A Marathon business is out almost $2,000 after they received a call from a man claiming their electricity would be shut off if they did not pay the debt with cash cards immediately. The man on the phone told employees of the business they needed to go to the store and buy the cash cards, scratch off the back of the cards and give him the number. By the time the business figured out they had been scammed, he had already cashed the cards.
Neither Florida Keys Electric Co-op, nor Keys Energy Services will EVER call and ask for an immediate cash payment. No matter how persuasive the person on the phone is, don’t fall for it. Scammers can be extremely convincing – it is what they do for a living.
