Man dies after traffic stop

A man arrested for driving with his license suspended today after a traffic stop died while being transported to jail in a Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle.

39 year old Clifford Green was northbound on U.S. One at 1:20 p.m. when he was stopped by Detective Iscandel Perez at the 98.5 mile marker for having what appeared to be illegal tint on his windows. A check of his driver’s license revealed it was suspended.

Green was taken into custody. As Deputy Thomas Hill was on the way to the jail Green appeared to be having medical issues.

Deputy Hill pulled over and immediately called for medical assistance. He rendered aid to Green until paramedics arrived a short time later. They took over care and transported Green to Mariner’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Because Green was in Sheriff’s Office custody at the time of this incident, Sheriff Rick Ramsay requested the response of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. That agency will investigate the death.
