Sheriff’s detectives in the Major Crimes Unit say they have outstanding warrants for two male sex offenders who are no longer at the addresses they officially registered in Monroe County.
Sex offenders are required by the courts to register their home addresses with law enforcement; each time they move, they must make official notification of the new address where they are living. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit periodically go to those registered addresses to verify they are, indeed, living there.
Recently, detectives did these periodic checks and discovered two sex offenders were not living where they said they were. Warrants were subsequently issued for their arrest. The charge of failing to report vacating a permanent residence is a third degree felony crime.
The two wanted men are:
Gustavo Barrera, also known as Gustavo Acosta. Barrera is 57 years old and was last known to drive a white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado truck with Florida tag: CUFG41. Barrera may have moved to Orlando, but has not registered there. He is a sex offender convicted in Miami Dade for unlawful sexual activity with certain minors 16-17 years of age. Barrera’s last known address was on 1st Street East in Key Largo.
Travis Dodge, 32 years old, is reportedly homeless and is known to travel between Florida, Michigan and California. He is a
sex offender convicted in Michigan for criminal sexual conduct, assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. His last address was listed as homeless in Marathon area; at last contact he said he was leaving for Michigan, but he has not registered there or anywhere else.
Anyone who knows where these men are should contact the Sheriff's Office. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys. If a Crimestoppers tip leads to an arrest, the caller would be eligible for a cash reward. The Crimestoppers hot line number is 1-800-346-TIPS.
