A Marathon Sheriff’s deputy is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man who tried to steal a cart full of groceries from Publix in Marathon.

Deputy Vincent Torres says the man tried to walk out of the store with a shopping cart full of groceries on May 26that 3:45 p.m. Store employees recognized him as someone they suspected may have stolen from the store in the past, so they were watching him on store cameras.

When the man wheeled the full cart out of the store, the store manager called the Sheriff’s Office, then approached the man and told him to return to the store. The man left the cart on the sidewalk and walked to his truck, a gray colored Ford Ranger with damage to the driver’s side headlight. The manager followed the man to the truck, which was backed into a parking space. The manager took a picture of the suspect and then stood in front of the truck. The suspect started the truck, put it in drive and began to ram into the manager, pushing him backward approximately 20 feet before leaving on U.S. One northbound.

Surveillance cameras captured a clear image of the suspect. Deputy Torres would like help in identifying him.

Anyone who recognizes the man should contact Deputy Torres at 305-289-2430 or vtorres@keysso.net.
