A Jacksonville family of six were rescued about three miles south of the Seven Mile Bridge Monday morning after their pontoon boat became swamped by waves and began sinking.

There were no reported serious injuries. The boaters got caught in the fast-moving storms that swept through Marathon.

The Sheriff’s Office received a call at 11:08 a.m. from the group stating their vessel was sinking. Marine Deputy Wilfredo Guerra found the sinking vessel and all six people near the Sombrero Key Light. A good Samaritan boater and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisted in the response.

The four adults and two children were taken to the Sunset Grille & Raw Bar. The pontoon boat was recovered by Sea Tow.

The FWC is investigating the incident.
