Man bites Corrections Sergeant on wrist

A 34-year-old Key West man was charged with battery Saturday after he bit a Corrections Sergeant on the wrist.

Chip Wayne Johnson was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Johnson was arrested initially by Key West Police on a damage to property charge. At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sheriff’s Office Corrections Sgt. Steven Katz was attempting to place Johnson in a restraint chair commonly used for inmates who are being combative at the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island when Johnson was able to bite Sgt. Katz in the writ. The bite was drew blood and required Sgt. Katz to receive medical care.

Johnson remains in jail. His initial $5,000 bail is now $20,000 due to the battery charge.
