Man arrested for reckless driving

A 53-year-old motorist from Sao Paulo, Brazil was arrested Wednesday night after reaching speeds of 86 mph on U.S. 1 in Marathon.  

Jonas Cezar Laurindvicius was charged with reckless driving. He was also cited for speeding and traveling in the wrong lane.

Deputy Jonathan Lane spotted a Chevrolet Camaro at 10:40 p.m. traveling approximately 100 mph northbound at Mile Marker 35. Deputy Lane lost sight of the Camaro after it traversed the Bahia Honda Key Bridge. Deputy Lane issued a be-on-the-lookout to other Deputies.

Deputy Corbin Hradecky spotted a northbound Camaro matching the description leaving the Seven Mile Bridge. Deputy Hradecky saw the Camaro enter the southbound lane in order to illegally pass multiple other northbound vehicles. Deputy Hradecky used his radar equipment to ascertain the Camaro was traveling 86 mph in a 35 mph zone through Marathon. Deputy Hradecky turned on his lights and sirens and attempted to perform a traffic stop. The Camaro continued to accelerate.

The Camaro stopped a traffic light at 33rdStreet. Deputy Hradecky ordered the driver out at gunpoint given his estimation the driver was attempting to flee. The driver, identified as Laurindvicius, was detained without incident.

Laurindvicius stated he was traveling fast because he was in a hurry.

Laurindvicius was taken to jail.
