• FDOT will be closing the southern entrance of Aviation Boulevard beginning March 30 for two weeks for a widening project that will make the ingress/egress there three lanes instead of two. The project also includes median work on U.S. 1 that should significantly improve motorist safety in terms of turning onto the highway. The project means all residents who live on roads off Aviation Boulevard will have to take 107th Street or 109th Street to access Aviation Boulevard.
• Sheriff Rick Ramsay has been in contact with FDOT since Hurricane Irma regarding street lights that have gone unrepaired. Sheriff Ramsay views this as a public safety as well as a quality of life issue and is pleased that FDOT will begin not only repairs, but also lighting improvements beginning the week of April 1. The $669,000 project will occur in Key West at Mile Marker 0 to the county at Mile Marker 6, which is at Boca Chica Key. The project will also take place in Marathon at Mile Marker 47 to Mile Marker 53. The project will take roughly five months to complete.
The project will require periodic lane closures and construction will be done in stages. The closures will be scheduled to avoid peak periods of traffic and special events.
