Big Coppitt Key – A Cape Coral man was arrested Tuesday after he was caught on video tape stealing cigarettes and a cell phone from the Circle K convenience store on Big Coppitt Key.

Deputy Freddy Rodriguez responded to the store Tuesday morning and spoke with the manager who said he was reviewing store surveillance tape from overnight and saw a crime occur in the early morning hours. On the tape he saw three men in the store. One walked into the store’s office and put two cartons of Newport cigarettes under his shirt. He also grabbed a cell phone, taking it with him as well. The other two men walked around the store, made a few purchases and then they all left, driving away in a white Ford Crown Victoria.

Deputy Rodriguez took a report and left the store. He was on patrol at 5th Avenue and Cross Street on Stock Island a short time later when he saw three men in a car fitting that description. He pulled the car over with the assistance of Deputy Lazaro Valdes.

He told the three men they were caught on tape in the store. At that point one of the men, 20 year old Joshua Borges, admitted to the theft. He said his friends had nothing to do with it. The stolen cell phone was found in his pocket along with two packets of what appeared to be the illegal substance “Spice”. The substance will be tested and charges may be pending for possession of it.

Borges was charged with burglary and grand theft. He was booked into jail.
