A Key West man was arrested for felony possession of marijuana after a traffic stop on Saturday.
Traffic Enforcement Deputy David Brummer was on patrol at the 7 mile marker of the highway at 9:20 a.m. when he spotted a silver sport utility vehicle speeding southbound. He measured the vehicle’s speed at 72 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone.
Deputy Brummer pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as 26 year old Matthew Elswick of Key West. When Elswick rolled down his driver’s side window the deputy could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside. When he asked Elswick about it, Elswick admitted to having the drug in the vehicle’s back seat. Upon investigation, Deputy Brummer found a half pound of the illegal substance in the back seat. He also found drug paraphernalia.
A check on Elswick’s name through computers also revealed a suspended driver’s license. He was placed under arrest. He was charged with driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
