A 21-year-old Marathon man was arrested early Wednesday morning for auto theft and giving law enforcement a false ID, among other charges.
Nicholas Alejandro Duran, formerly of Miami, was also charged with probation violation and driving without a valid license.
Deputy Edward Swogger responded to a 1:30 a.m. call to on the 1900 block of the Overseas Highway regarding a case of indecent exposure. A hotel security guard there said the suspect left driving a white, Oldsmobile car. The guard stated the suspect, later identified as Duran, left wearing only a towel.
The Oldsmobile was found at another hotel on the 2100 block of the highway. Duran was in the driver’s seat. Duran said he was listening to music. He had on only a towel. He provided Deputy Swogger with three different spellings of his name and three different birthdays. Deputy Swogger contacted one of Duran’s family members in Miami who gave him the correct name for Duran. The family member also stated that Duran was supposed to be at a treatment center in Florida City as part of his probation.
Meanwhile, further investigation revealed the Oldsmobile had been reported stolen out of Marathon.
The guard at the first hotel stated that Duran entered three rooms, removed his clothes and took towels out of the rooms. It was unclear why he removed his clothes.
Duran was taken to jail.
