Rory Gabriel Robles was charged with possession of heroin with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Deputy Joel Torres was on patrol at 3:10 a.m. in Islamorada when he saw a driver, later identified as Robles, in a gray car run a stop sign and then turn into Cheeca Lodge & Spa. Deputy Torres watched as a resort security guard at the entrance gate motioned Robles to pull over to the corner of the entrance. Deputy Torres then approached the guard and asked what Robles wanted. The guard told Deputy Torres that Robles wanted to visit a friend, however the guard had no guests listed under the name Robles provided. The guard further stated he did not recognize Robles as a guest at the resort. Deputy Torres then approached the gray vehicle Robles was driving. Deputy Torres noticed the driver’s side window was slightly down. Deputy Torres noted the smell of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.
Robles initially denied having anything illegal in the vehicle. Sgt. Robert Dosh arrived on scene. Robles showed Deputy Torres a text message that Robles claimed was sent from his friend at the resort. The text stated Travel Lodge, room 401. There is no Travel Lodge in Monroe County. Robles stated he had been traveling south on U.S. 1 when he had been traveling north. Robles’ statements progressively made less sense. Robles eventually admitted to having a water pipe or “bong” in his bag. He turned the pipe, which smelled of marijuana, over to Deputy Torres. Robles then gave Deputy Torres permission to search the vehicle.
Two Ziploc bags were found. One contained 10.1 grams of a substance that field-tested positive for heroin. Another bag contained 1.6 grams of a similar substance found in the first bag. One hydrocodone tablet was found as well as multiple other baggies.
Robles was taken to jail.
