A 17-year-old Bay Harbor Islands, Florida boy was arrested early Tuesday morning after reaching speeds of more than 100 mph on U.S. 1.

The boy was charged with fleeing and eluding.

Upper Keys Deputy Joel Torres was conducting speed enforcement about 1 a.m. near Mile Marker 94 when he observed a small car traveling 82 mph. Deputy Torres activated his lights and siren. The car reached speeds of 103 mph. Deputy Torres radioed the information.

The car, a Mazda, stopped after about nine miles for Sgt. Orlando Alvarez at Mile Marker 103.

There were three passengers in the car — a 19-year-old male and two 20-year-old males.

The passengers stated that the driver knew law enforcement was behind him when he refused to stop.

The juvenile’s father was notified and the juvenile was taken to jail.
