A 48-year-old Islamorada man was arrested Thursday night after a pickup truck he was driving backed into a Deputy’s patrol car during a traffic stop.

Charles James Cann was charged with DUI and DUI with property damage.

Upper Keys Deputy Joel Rios stopped a white Dodge pickup truck near Mile Marker 82 after receiving reports that the vehicle was unable to maintain a lane and was driving into oncoming traffic. Deputy Rios was getting out of his vehicle when the driver of the truck, identified as Cann, placed the truck into reverse, which resulted in the rear of the truck striking the front of Deputy Rios’ squad car, causing about $1,000 in damage.

There was a partially full bottle of rum inside the truck. Cann had trouble standing, has slurred speech, smelled of alcohol and watery eyes.

Cann refused to take field sobriety tests. He also refused to provide a sample of his breath.

Cann has three previous DUI arrests since 2010.

Cann was taken to jail.
